NOT A RUNNER
About the Book
One moment can change the course of a life forever. For Reg Willick, that moment came with a devastating phone call—an event that would alter his path, ignite a relentless drive, and lead him toward a mission bigger than himself.
In this raw and powerful memoir, Reg shares his journey through unimaginable loss, the surprising salvation he found in running, and the profound impact of paying it forward. From the heartbreak of a tragic accident that shook him to his core to the triumph of completing the Great World Race—seven marathons on seven continents in seven days—this is a story of grit, determination, and unwavering resolve. But this book is more than just races run and finish lines crossed; it’s also about the people and places that shaped his life, the deep influence of his wife, Janice, and the comfort and joy found in the companionship of dogs. It’s about finding purpose after retirement, standing up to injustice, navigating the flaws of bureaucracy, life’s inequalities, and a global crisis—and discovering healing through action and compassion.
Told with honesty, vulnerability, and humour, Not a Runner is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of doing what’s right—no matter the cost—and how even the smallest acts of kindness can create ripples of change. Some wounds never heal. But through running, resilience, and reaching out to others, Reg Willick found a way to keep moving forward.

REGINALD J WILLICK
About the Author
Reg Willick is a retired business owner and lifelong builder—both in construction and in life. He took up running at fifty, spurred by tragedy, a health scare, and the urging of his wife, Janice, proving it’s never too late to embrace new challenges. A seasoned world traveller, Reg has lived in three countries, collecting a lifetime of experiences—some good, some difficult—that have shaped his perspective. Early doubts from others in both business and life only fueled his determination and strengthened his commitment to paying it forward.
Reg is also an aviation enthusiast. He has piloted small aircraft and is drawn to anything that takes to the skies. He thrives on adventure, whether it’s pushing himself physically, exploring new places, or seizing life’s opportunities. His philosophy is simple: don’t wait—do it now. Take the trip, make the memories, and live with no regrets. And if you ever meet him, you’ll quickly discover his gift of gab, sharp wit, and just the right twist of humour to keep things interesting.
Reg now divides his time between summers in Vancouver, British Columbia, and winters in Indio, California, alongside Janice, his wife of forty-two years, and their two teacup Maltese, Jabori and Jasiri.

One of the best books you could ever read about an ordinary person who does extraordinary things in life. If you are ever fortunate enough to meet Janice and Reg, your life will be filled with positive energy, brotherhood, generosity and finding joy in those little things that some people called simple.

My dear Reg and Janice,
I just finished the book and don't know why my tears don't stop🥹
I feel so lucky to have gotten to know you since you moved into Cardero in 2022. From the very beginning, your kindness and golden hearts stood out. You have truly been role models to me — the kind of people I aspire to be.
You would often briefly tell me about what you were working on, but I never knew the full story until now. I just finished reading Not A RUNNER and I laughed and cried along the way.
Even though you say you're "not a writer," the way you put your words together made me feel everything you went through. It felt like I was sitting right in front of you, listening to you tell your story — so personal, so real. I felt all the emotions in every word — the joy, the sorrow, and everything in between.
As someone who isn’t a native English speaker, I also want to say how beautifully accessible the book was. It was easy to understand, yet so deeply moving. I believe it’s because the life you’ve both lived — with compassion, courage, and authenticity — speaks directly to the hearts of others.
Thank you for sharing your journey. It truly touched mine.

Thank you so very much for a great read Reg, I found your book to be so interesting, very inspiring and motivating, and also very meaningful. I would like to break it down chapter by chapter as I had so many thoughts on each one. Your determination and drive is unfathomable really, like you said so many times, why bother...why keep trying...who really will care...but somehow you and Janice always dug deeper somewhere within and did it anyway, which takes extreme discipline, strength, energy and perseverance. It is quite honourable really. The world should have more people like you two.

Dear Reg and Janice
I have started off with my physical copy and its like I am just reading this for the first time. I can honestly say that I am shedding tears 😭 because of the kindness that flows through every page. You have not only blessed the hearts of those that you have directly touched but many others in the circle of the 'touched' like myself😊
Well Done!
